Brass Alloy Applications – What You Should Know

Brass Alloy Applications – What You Should Know

Brass is one of the most versatile metal alloys in the world and it is for this reason that it is arguably the most widely used of all the alloys. From sand casting companies to local household manufacturers, there appears to be an almost endless number of industries that manufacture various products using the particular alloy. Basically, brass is an alloy that is made up of zinc and copper.

These are the elements that give brass the unique properties that it has come to be associated with. Although the most basic properties of brass tend to remain the same, most of the other properties associated with it can be varied and changed by varying the proportions of the copper and zinc within the alloy. Below are some of the most important qualities of brass that make it so popular for use in industries.

  • Machinability- brass is an alloy that is easily formed and this is one of the main reasons why it is commonly used in brass casting services. The advantage here is not just that they are easy to form but because they are capable of retaining high strength after they have been formed.
  • Ductility- brass of all types is known to be ductile which also makes them attractive for industrial applications. Again it is possible to make the brass alloy even more ductile by reducing the zinc content and increasing the copper content which means that you can manipulate it to suit your needs with ease.
  • Antimicrobial properties- It makes a very poor breeding ground for bacteria and this makes it ideal for manufacture of parts used in medical applications.
  • Corrosion resistance- this property makes it ideal for the manufacture of low friction parts that can be used both for decorative and for mechanical parts.
